Postdoc – Performance requirements for biobased construction materials used in the building envelope
Jobbeskrivelse
The Department of the Built Environment (BUILD) at The Technical Faculty of Engineering and Science invites applications for a position as PostDoc in the field of material science, modelling and determining performance requirements of materials and decarbonized buildings. The position is available from June 1st, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is temporary for 2 years and is based at Aalborg University’s Copenhagen campus. You will join the Building Physics research group at BUILD located at Copenhagen campus, which conducts research on correct construction techniques for both new and existing materials as well as new products, covering both new buildings and renovation.
Focusing on developing robust solutions that enhance the sustainability of construction, including increased use of biobased and other renewable materials, and evaluating recycled materials without compromising durability.Your work tasks You will contribute to developing and demonstrating the technical properties of materials to provide the basis for formulating new standards using biobased materials in the building envelope. Your main responsibilities will include:Providing scenarios for moisture-related challenges and limit values for the use of biobased materials in constructionProviding guidelines for moisture levels in relation to moisture from the building process and the use phase of buildings and material properties and effects on human healthProvide technical solutions for the use of biobased materials as regards standardized solutions and building technology ensuring high robustness against moisture. The position requires close collaboration both with national and international partners, as well as contributing to dissemination activities in high-impact journals and conferences. Your competencies We are looking for a motivated researcher with an interest in the transition of the building environment through decarbonizing the construction of buildings using biobased and re-used as well as renewable materials. We seek a person with interdisciplinary competencies spanning building physics, materials science, and interest in microbiology.
Strong expertise is needed in the characterization of biobased materials, including their hygrothermal properties, durability, and performance limits in building applications. Competence in laboratory testing and development of test methods is essential, as is experience assessing mold growth and potential impacts on human health. Advanced skills in moisture transport analysis, including experimental investigation and numerical simulation of building envelopes, are required to ensure moisture-robust designs. In addition, competencies in data processing and integration, assessment criteria development, and practical construction knowledge are necessary to translate research results into guidelines, technical solutions, and repairable, maintainable building systems suitable for real-world use.Qualification requirementsAppointment as postdoc requires academic qualifications at PhD level.Who we are You will be part of the Research Group for Building Physics at BUILD, Aalborg University. The research group focuses on ensuring correct construction techniques for both new applications of known materials and the use of new products in the market, in both new construction and renovation.
The group develops robust solutions to improve the sustainability of buildings, for example through increased use of biobased and other re-use and renewable materials, and by evaluating recycled products without compromising durability. In addition, the group studies the durability and future performance of building envelope solutions, including airtightness and moisture-related properties, particularly in the context of climate change.BUILD employs more than 180 staff across Aalborg and Copenhagen and is internationally known for its interdisciplinary approach to solving complex challenges in the built environment. The department and the Building Physics research group leverages unique research infrastructures and strong collaboration with industry and policymakers to conduct world-leading research that supports the transition towards a sustainable society.
We offer access to laboratory facilities, real-world pilot cases, and a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment. You can read more about the department at www.build.aau.dk.The Villum Foundation has launched a record-breaking research grant of 1 billion kroner over the next ten years with the aim of promoting efforts for a more sustainable built environment. BUILD and the research group are part of the venue, and the successful candidate will participate in the joint effort to achieve this goal.
In addition, the candidate will participate in the research group's other tasks within authority tasks and the preparation of guidelines aimed at the built environment in Denmark. The position is part of a larger strategic strengthening within the field of material science at BUILD. It is an advantage that the candidate understands and speaks Danish. How to apply Your application must include the following: Application, stating reasons for applying, qualifications in relation to the position, and intentions and visions for the position Curriculum Vitae (CV) Diplomas (master's degree diploma and PhD diploma) List of publications, with an indication of the attached publications that you wish to be taken into account in the assessment.
